What Does the Bible Say About Self-Care?

Let’s tackle this question first. The exact word self-care is not used in the bible and can look a little different than what we may practice today, but nonetheless…God’s word is clear that we are to take time for ourselves to draw near to Him and care for ourselves.

Self Care is a term that used to be used in the medical community for someone capable of say, going home from the hospital and being able to “self-care” without assistance. The term these days is used for more of a pampering type of title. The truth is, however, without some of these pamperings, boundaries, and caring needs of ourselves…we COULD end up IN a hospital! We need to take care of our bodies.

That is why it is SO IMPORTANT to know and read God’s word. There are many many examples of self-care scriptures…this post only has such a small amount!

How Did Jesus Practice Self-Care?

One verse we might look at for an example of how Jesus Christ practiced Self-Care is Luke 5:16. It says “But he would withdraw to desolate places and pray.” “he” refers to Jesus. Jesus Christ is our example of all things the Father desires for our lives.

To follow Jesus’ example of self-care spiritually, we must find time to spend in prayer with our heavenly Father…which would involve having boundaries to be alone with the Father.

These are the types of examples you will find in the Bible. Not the words “self-care”. I hope that makes sense!
