The meal prep for this meal is set-it-and-forget-it AND it’s very versatile! You can use uncooked red beans for an all-day simmer or canned red beans for a shorter time in the Slow Cooker. See the variations and tips throughout the post, to fuel your ideas for unique variations!

Ham Kielbasa and Bean Crockpot Soup

This Kielbasa Crockpot recipe is packed with flavor and nutrients. Great for keeping your family healthy during the winter months. This isn’t your ordinary red beans and rice meal! It gets a kick-up from using the Kielbasa and a little ham! Super filling and definitely a crowd-pleaser.

If you’re like me, you’ll want to try different variations on occasion. Don’t be afraid to experiment a little.

Substitutes & Variations:

Within this post, I give lots of examples of ways you can switch up your Ham, Kielbasa, Beans Slow Cooker Recipe BUT here are some other ideas you will love!

  • Add different kinds of beans. You can use white cannellini white beans, navy beans, black beans…any kind! The process is still the same.
  • Use canned beans. Red Beans (mentioned below) Simply rinse and add to the recipe. Cook for a shorter time. 5 hours.
  • Add Pork and Baked Beans. Since these have a sauce you can expect a little saucier meal..also of course cook for a shorter period (5 hours) Oh so yum!
  • Add a little Dijon Mustard. This will spice it up just a little…I often add to my BBQ pork and chicken crockpot meals.
  • Add different veggies… like potatoes, and red peppers instead of green
  • If you have a favorite spice…add a little! Always start with small amounts first. I’d say no more than 1/2 teaspoon to start.
  • Sweeten your slow cooker meal with a little honey or brown sugar.
  • Add sauces like BBQ Sauce, and ketchup. If you have a sweet BBQ sauce to add, I wouldn’t add any of the above sweeteners.
  • Use your favorite hot sauce…but be careful! This basic recipe does have Ceyanne Pepper in the ingredients already.

As you can see above there are so many ways to cook this delicious but simple meal. I always encourage my family and friends (that’s you too!) to make recipes their own. Want more sauce? Add it. Want more spice? Add it! Hate veggies? Leave them out! It’s your home…enjoy cooking the things you like.

What you’ll love about this recipe:

  • KID FRIENDLY – My kids LOVE this recipe! They always ask for seconds.
  • VERSATILE – You can serve the Kielbasa and Beans over anything! Rice is the traditional way BUT we have served them it over noodles and potatoes!
  • INEXPENSIVE – Made with mostly inexpensive ingredients you already have in your pantry.
  • HEALTHY – I’ve said it before…this Kielbasa and Beans Slow Cooker Recipe is packed with protein for healthy bodies. Great for very active folks on the go!

Crockpot with all the ingredients in it. Red beans, ham, kielbasa, celery, onion, bay leaf

Quick Tips & Tricks

  • Hate Slow Cooker cleanup? Use liners!! They are the best!
  • Dried Beans need to cook the full 8 hours on HIGH or they can still be a little hard.
  • You can soften up the dry red beans by soaking them overnight, but NOT necessary for this recipe.
  • Mash SOME of your beans 3 quarters of the way through for a little quicker cooking. This will also make your dish thicker so keep this in mind.
  • Can you put canned red kidney beans in a slow cooker? Yes! You can use canned Red Beans. If you do, you need only cook for 5 hours.
  • For an added kick-up in flavor, use 1/2 to 1 bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce, just pour it in. YUM!
  • Top with Cilantro for a Mexican flare.

Step-by-Step Instructions

This recipe has only a few easy steps. TIP ~ You could even chop the veggies the night before so that they are ready to go first thing in the morning.

Step 1: Cut up all of your ingredients first. I use my Ninja food processor for almost all my chopping because it makes food prep go so fast.

Another shot of the crockpot with all ingredients except it has the canned tomato's on top

Step 2: Add all of the ingredients into the Slow Cooker and Stir.

Step 3. Cook on HIGH for 8 hours.

Step 4: Serve with Rice! This isn’t your ordinary Red Beans and Rice meal because it’s got all the added flavor from Ham and Kielbasa!
