Why Choose Homemade Chicken Patties?

Making chicken patties from scratch might sound like extra work, but trust me, they are easy and SO worth it! It’s not much work at all. From saving money to customizing flavors, there are plenty of perks for making these crispy chicken patties!

Are These Like Store-Bought Chicken Patties?

These are homemade chicken patties made from real ground chicken, NOT frozen or factory-made. There are no fillers or preservatives, just simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

You can season them exactly how your family likes, whether that’s mild and classic or a little spicy…YUM! If you’ve ever bought frozen chicken patties from the store, you’ll be surprised how easy it is to make your own from scratch.

What you’ll love about these Crispy Chicken Patties:

  • KID FRIENDLY – Kids LOVE these yummy Chicken Patties!
  • CONTROL OVER INGREDIENTS – By making your own patties, you’re in control. Factory-made patties often contain preservatives and unhealthy fillers. With this recipe, you can stick to wholesome, natural ingredients that you trust.
  • INEXPENSIVE – When you’re feeding a family, every dollar counts. Homemade chicken patties are an affordable alternative to store-bought options. You can even make a large batch and freeze extras for quick meals later.
  • VERSATILE – With this recipe you can add finely chopped veggies, any kind of cheese and use any flavored Panko Bread Crumbs to make them your own!

Delicious Homemade Chicken Patty Recipe

With only a few simple ingredients this easy recipe comes together quite quickly.
Once again, with this recipe, I made my own ground chicken. If you’d like to try to ground your own chicken, this is the Ninja Food Processor I use. It’s easy and cheaper than store bought. I used 1 chicken breast, which came out to be 1/2 pound of ground chicken. This is the same I used for my Homemade Chicken Nuggets with Ground Chicken.

Simple Ingredients for Homemade Chicken Patties

Main Ingredients

  • 1 Ground Chicken Breast or 1/2 lb. Ground Chicken (store bought)
  • Egg ~ this is used for binding the ingredients together.
  • Cheese ~ any kind you like
  • Panko breadcrumbs with Italian Seasoning
  • Optional ~ Garlic Salt, Garlic Powder, or Onion Powder

I’ve been asked many times about what MY favorite cheese is to use in this recipe…it’s Pepper Jack Cheese…or a Blend with Spicy Pepper Cheese. That’s because I LOVE spicy.

Directions

Not only do you not need a bunch of special tools for this recipe, putting it together is a snap.

In a medium bowl or large bowl (depending on how much you are making) add ground chicken, egg and cheese. Mix. Make sure your chicken mixture is thoroughly blended.

Forming the Patties

Form your chicken patties. You can make your chicken burgers as big or small as you like. I make them about the size you would buy in the store, that way they fit on hamburger buns if you serve them that way.

TIP 1: If your chicken patties start to fall apart just press them back together on our baking sheet. They will cook together and stay together.

TIP 2: If your chicken patties fall apart and you are feeling super frustrated you can add just a little Panko Breadcrumbs to your mixture, about a Tablespoon…it’s perfectly ok!

After forming your chicken patties put them into the Panko Breadcrumbs and coat both sides. The breadcrumbs will stick easily as the chicken mixture will be super moist. If adding Garlic Salt or a little Onion Powder, you can sprinkle a little on now.

Cooking Methods:

Here’s where you can choose your preference (our family favorite is air frying and baking).

  • Baking: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper (I use unbleached paper) or use Olive Oil cooking spray. Pop them in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes, flipping them over halfway through to ensure they cook evenly. They’re done once they’re golden brown and cooked through.
  • Stove top Frying: Heat a small amount of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry each patty for about 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown, check to make sure that they are thoroughly cooked through. I use a Meat Thermometer when I fry them. Internal temp should be 165 F degrees.
  • Air Fryer Chicken Patties: If you have an air fryer, Set your air fryer to 375°F. Spray the basket (or tray) with a little non-stick Olive Oil Cooking Spray, then place the patties inside, make sure they don’t overlap. Cook them for about 18 minutes, turn over for even cooking and a more golden brown crust half the way through. If you DON’T have an air fryer, I use the Ninja Digital Air Fryer & Toaster Oven Best purchase ever!

  • Serve plain on a bun with lettuce and tomato.

  • Chicken Patty Parmesan – Top with marinara and mozzarella; bake until bubbly and serve over pasta.
  • Open-Face Chicken Melt – Place patty on toasted sourdough, add onions and cheese; broil.
  • Chicken Patty Sliders – Serve on Hawaiian rolls with lettuce and a swipe of mayo or ranch. Fun for little hands.

Storing and Reheating Leftover Chicken Patties

IF you have leftovers here’s how to keep them fresh and tasty!

Freezing and reheating properly will keep your Chicken Patties them tasting just as fresh as when you made them. These are good when thawed and reheated!

Once your patties cool, place them in an airtight container. You can refrigerate them for up to 3 days or freeze them. OR

  • Flash Freeze: Lay your cooked chicken patties in a single layer on a sheet pan and freeze for an half hour. Then, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or any airtight container. Flash Freezing prevents them from sticking together so you can pull out just what you need.
  • Reheating for Best Results: To reheat, preheat your oven to 350°F. Place the frozen patties on a baking sheet and bake for about 10-12 minutes. This method keeps them crispy on the outside and warm on the inside. Or of course, you can use your air fryer to reheat. Heat on 375 degrees for 5 minutes then check if heated through.
