Chalk Talk for Kids–Ideas for Hiding God’s Word in Our Heart
Since I have been on the topic lately about tweens and teens I thought I would share one of the simple ways that we try to keep our kids minds filled with:
“whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.”
Phil. 4:8
It’s hard these days to have very much extended time with our kids ALL together. Gathering them up and doing a little Bible Study with them when they were younger was much easier.
So..this is what we do now.. Chalk Talk…
We have a HUGE chalk board between our kitchen and dining room (so you can’t miss it) Once a week my husband or I write a scripture or famous quote, anything we want to have stick in our kids’ minds and heart…Hmmm wonder if I should write “clean your rooms” LOL
Anyway..here is this weeks quote:
Do you wonder how I know that my kids are really reading it and if it is really sinking in? First I know because by end of the week there will be doodles ALL over this board. Around all the words and edges! LOL I think it is there way of saying got it Mom and Dad..you know a secret signature. Also, comments will slip out of there mouths like…”Wow your light isn’t shining bright!” or something like that.
A couple of weeks ago my husband put up a scripture from Proverbs about wreakless words! The very same day we put it up we heard one of them say “Hey those are wreakless words!” Unfortunately we heard that many times that week..I guess that’s a good thing..being aware of our words..right?!
Some of the other ways that we use our chalk board for fun and character training are:
- riddles..they can be biblical or just funny..see how long it takes someone to figure it out
- love notes..of course!
- plain old jokes
- have each family member draw a pic. of themselves..interesting to see how kids see themselves in the family
- fill in the blank
- write a verse and have them find it in the Concordance..obviously for older kids
- Memorize Scripture and offer a prize
Well there are a million ways to use a chalkboard to communicate to your kids. But what I think is most important is that you keep it light hearted and a FUN thing to do!

Love it! We have magnetic words that we leave messages with on the refrig…, like “use prayer,” “feed your spirit,” etc. What’s interesting is not what I put up, but how our teen and tween evolve the messages, showing that they’re listening, learning, and that it’s sinking in.
Oh I love it Chelle! It just warms my heart when I see that they are paying attention! I need to get some magnetic letters for my Grandson..Hmmm I wonder what will evolve out of those letters with my kids 🙂 LOL Thanks for stopping by!

Shari, I loved this. I love the thought of having a quote or statement to see for the day. Sometimes we need things like this where we can visually see what we need to work on and how we can make a difference in each others lives. This really made me think about how I can use my blog to do the same. If not on a biblical standpoint, at least in a way where everyone gets it. Thank you I needed this today.

Oh, Shari, this is inspired! Who was it who said the simplest ways are the best? Well, in this case, it’s certainly true! I love putting up inspirational, witty or just pithy quotes in my house, but there are so many. This answers the need perfectly. Thank you for sharing!

Hey! I’m from the IB4M community and I’m criticing your blog! I love your message and I absolutly adore your header. The pictures are so cute. One thing that throws me off however is how busy your blog is. I get distracted easily and I’ll be reading one of your post and all of a sudden it is like, “ohhh ads and links. Wait where was I reading?”
I like the pink it is very nice, I also like the chalkboard idea, except that it would never work at my house. We would lose the chalk or our dog would eat it, or most likly it would break. One of my favorite quotes however is, “You can tell a lot about a fellow’s character by his way of eating jellybeans.” –Ronald Reagan. It’s kind of a random quote, but I think it means that everything you do, you should do properly because it represents you. It reminds me to do every thing in a kind and thoughtful manner, even if I’m just eating jeally beans.

Hello, this is an interesting idea that I have used with my students. I’m an English teacher teaching English as a second language in Malaysia and I find that students respond better when they can see themselves on the board.I allow them to write anything – quotes, a poem that they like etc and I find that almost everyone wants to write on the board. We have a rotation system and each child gets to write at least twice in the week so they all get a chance to say something.

I have been very amazed that even my Sons teen friends will put a little tiny doodle on our chalkboard..so I know that they have even read what we’ve written.
