First, I want to say that this is NOT a paper fortune teller. Although this fun cootie catcher game has been used as an origami fortune teller waaay in the past, (like when I was in grade school) that is NOT what this is for. God is the only one who knows the future…not a piece of paper with writing on it.

Now that I’ve clarified what this Animal Cootie Catcher game is not, let’s get on with what it IS and the fun ways to use the paper cootie catcher for educational purposes…oh and for fun too! After you see how fun and easy it is to use these fun cootie catchers, you’ll want to make your own cootie catcher!

5 Ways to Use the Free Printable Animal Cootie Catcher Template

There’s more learning than you can believe with this simple little Cootie Catcher Game. With kids, anything can be turned into learning all while having fun…especially with the younger ones! I hope you will find one of these suggestions a fun way to infuse learning into your kiddo’s lives.

  • Let your kids be in control: The fun thing about the Cootie Catcher is that there are so many options and variations that the kids can choose many different animals, at many different times. It’s ok if they choose the same one repeatedly as long as they are engaging and having fun.
  • Have your kids count: Each time they choose a number have them count to that number. Count with them if need be.
  • Have the kids act out each animal they land on: Kids LOVE to act out different animals!
  • Talk about it: Talk about each animal you land on. What they eat, where they live, would that animal be a pet or a wild animal…and why?
  • Look it up on the computer, your phone, or a book: As you talk about the animals, your smart kiddo will undoubtedly ask you questions you don’t know…take time to look up the answers with them! Maybe even a trip to the library!

One great idea I had while creating this fun Cootie Catcher Printable is that the folding activity is a lot like Origami and teaching young ones to fold on the lines is a great way to build up those detail-oriented skills and fine motor skills.

This is a great time to have your older kids help you and even play along!

CAUTION: If folding is above where your child is in development…have them go with your hands or just do it for them. Know ahead of time what your Toddlers and Preschoolers can handle. This should be a fun activity, not one that frustrates them to tears

Step 3: Fold in half. It doesn’t matter which way you fold. It won’t make a difference in how your cootie catcher will turn out. Rotate and then fold in half again. You can sort of see how it’s folded in picture below. There should be 4 squares.

Step 4: Now, while your paper is picture-side down (as seen above) fold the corner over like the picture below. Do this with all of the corners.

Step 5: Once you have folded each corner over on the back of the cootie catcher…turn over to the print side and fold the corners inside again.

It’s super easy friends, I made this with my 4-four-year-old granddaughter…I folded and she pressed down along the lines.

Step 6: Ok…we’re almost done! Now fold it in half like in the picture below. Remember you will be putting your fingers into the corners…this may help when folding and thinking about what the outcome is going to be.

Then fold again in the other direction! Put your fingers into each of the 4 corner pockets. Then let the games begin!

You’ll probably need to work with your little one to help them get the hang of the cootie catcher. It takes a little finger coordination and fine motor dexterity. Some kids may get frustrated, so don’t push it. Remember… it’s about learning and FUN.
