1

Pick out Your Pumpkin

The first step is to go to the pumpkin patch or to the store and pick out your pumpkin. Talk about how we are picked and chosen by God too!

Ephesians 1:4-5 "even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,"

2

Wash off your pumpkin and cut the top off

After washing off your pumpkin, then cut off the top. While doing this share with your kiddos that “When God found us we needed to be cleaned off. Also, as we cut the pumpkin top open, we need to receive Jesus so that we can be cleaned from the inside out.”

This is a great opportunity for your kids to ask Jesus into their hearts if they have never done this!

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him, shall not perish but have life everlasting"

Clean out your pumpkin

Cleaning out pumpkins is a messy and yucky business! Remind your kids that Jesus comes into our hearts and cleans us up! He cleans all the yucky out, shows us our sins, and changes our desires! Teach your kids that we all have sin (wrong things) that need to be cleaned out. Be sure and let your kids know that God forgives them for their sin and that we too as adults have sin that needs to be cleaned out! Don’t forget to save the seeds!

When God comes into our hearts He helps us to live like Jesus!

Ephesians 3:17-19 "so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."

Carve the eyes and ears of your pumpkin

As you carve the eyes of your pumpkin, talk about how Jesus shines his light in us and fills us with the Holy Spirit to see those in need around us.

While carving the ears of your pumpkin, talk about how we can hear God speak to us and obey him.

Jeramiah 3:33 "Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know."

5

Carve a Wonderful Smile

Carve a giant smile in your pumpkin and talk about how much the world needs Jesus’ love and joy. Talk about ways you can show love to others by speaking life to them! Encouragement and a smile go a long way to make others feel loved.

Proverbs 18:21 "Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
and those who love it will eat its fruits."

Insert Your Candle

Let your light shine for all the world to see!

Matthew 5:16 "In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."

Last but not least…if you’d like you can carve a nose in your pumpkin. We’ve carved different Christian symbols over the years, such as the shape of a fish or the shape of the cross. However, it’s not necessary.

What are the Words to the Pumpkin Prayer?

Kids need to learn to pray and talk to Jesus on their own. It’s very important that they build their own relationship with Him. I DO think however it’s perfectly ok to guide them in short prayers as they are learning to pray.

There are lots of ways to pray this fun prayer. The words of the Pumpkin Prayer or some call it the Pumpkin Parable goes like this:

Dear Jesus, As I carve my pumpkin, Help me pray this prayer: Open my mind so I can learn about you; Take all my sin and forgive the wrong that I do. Open my eyes so your love I will see; I'm sorry for times I've turned up my nose at what you've given to me. Open my ears so your word I will hear; Open my mouth to tell others you're near. Let your light shine in all I say and do! Amen.

The most important thing is to teach your kiddos to let their light shine, glorify God and have FUN.
