In my quest to save $$ on my grocery bill I have been making everything I possibly can from scratch.  Some things have turned out amazing and some not so…

Making Homemade Flour Tortillas is one of those because they are so expensive sometimes..$3 plus for a large package..come on..to much!!

I have tried many different recipes for Tortillas and this one is so simple and easy..I like it the best..but it does have fat so it may not be for you.  Also, I have found that with the Homemade Flour Tortillas they don’t stay soft for long.  Oh but I have a solution for that!

  • ~4 cups flour
  • ~2 teaspoons salt
  • ~1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ~2/3 cups shortening
  • ~1 cup + 3 tablespoons hot water

Combine all dry ingredients,  stir well.  Cut shortening until mixture resembles course cornmeal.  Gradually stir in water, mixing well.  Dough would be moist but not sticky.  Shape dough into 1 1/2 inch balls ( for 6 inch tortilla) larger for larger tortilla.  Roll each ball into a THIN circle.  Heat a dry frying pan or griddle to medium.  Cook tortillas about 2 min. on each side until lightly browned.  Pat tortillas with a spatula on the second side if they puff while cooking.  Makes about 2 dozen.  To reheat wrap in damp towel,  heat in microwave for a minute.

And when I feel like the Tortillas aren’t fresh and soft anymore (within a few days)  this is what I do with the rest,  this makes a nice thin,  crispy crust my kids love:!

Or I make Tortilla Chips..cut up Tortillas and bake in oven on low for about 15 minutes.  Take them out and they will be crisp!  Not like Corn Tortillas but the kids like them.

How are you saving $$ on your grocery bill?
