1pinch / sprinkleonion powder, garlic powder, black pepperOptional
Instructions
Start by forming your hamburger patties very thick and plump. I do not add anything to my hamburger steak meat mixture. It’s just plain lean ground beef and makes yummy, juicy hamburger steaks
OPTIONAL: Sprinkle a little onion powder, garlic powder or black pepper over them before cooking. It’s optional though, because most of your flavor will come from the gravy.
After making your hamburger steaks, place them into a large skillet that’s sprayed with a little cooking olive oil. Cook your hamburger steaks over medium heat. I use a lid to cover them so that they cook like an oven. Be sure and watch that you don’t burn them. They are thick but if you cook them over medium heat or even lower…then you should be good to go
While your Hamburger Steaks are cooking, make your gravy. By using a pre-packaged gravy. you’ll get food on the table quicker. I use McCormick’s Gravy, but you can use whatever you like! I add 1 Tbsp of Worcestershire Sauce to it to give it a little kick.
This is also the time that I am boiling my red potatoes. I use small ones cut in half so they boil up fast over medium-high heat.
Once your gravy is ready, pour half of the brown gravy over your hamburger steaks while they’re still on the stove. Then simmer for about 5 minutes.
If making mashed potatoes, this is the time to mash them. Drain your potatoes. then add a little bit of milk, butter and salt and pepper.
Now plate your Mashed Potatoes and top with a Hamburger Steak. Pour more gravy over the top! YUM! There you have it…a delicious comfort food classic.
Notes
This is the kind of recipe that you can switch up in many different ways!
Make any kind of gravy you like. Traditionally Hamburger Steaks are made with a plain Brown Gravy, however, you can make a Mushroom Gravy by simply sautéing mushrooms and adding them to your gravy. Or you can make Onion Gravy like I did with sauteed sliced onions.
You can also use ground turkey for this recipe.
It’s perfectly ok to use frozen patties for this Hamburger Steak recipe. Simply cook them a little longer OR thaw first.
