I remember the olden days…HA We almost never used the terms..Reduce, Reuse, Recycle with anything…sometimes it’s hard to change our way of thinking. Sometimes.. it’s hard to think that one person can even make a difference! However I’ve learned..you really can teach an old dog new tricks. I’m excited to share with you all of the ways that God has changed my heart in this area AND I’m excited to say that I have partnered with GE and have received coupons for my GE light bulbs. All opinions posted about my GE Lighting experience are my own.
I never really used to think much about Reducing, Reusing and Recycling..and although we did some of these things out of necessity..such as Reusing..it really had nothing to do with living sustainably OR caring for our environment. Yes I was selfish…
I must admit I have had to be totally re educated in this area. Re educated and convicted about being a good steward of what God has given us. In the story of King Hezekiah …it goes like this..He was a very rich king..Godly too..for most of his life…but then he got very sick, he was on his death bed when he begged God to let him live longer. God granted him a longer life..but Hezekiah became arrogant and prideful. Because of some of the choices he made God told him that his descendants would fall into captivity and live an enslaved life. Would you like to know what he said to that? “Oh well..I won’t be around to see it” of course that is my paraphrase…You get the idea though…He didn’t care about his children..his children’s children or anyone else..but himself..
Ouch..convicting..I don’t want to be like King Hezekiah..
We really need to see beyond ourselves..even if it means re education about things we may not see as so important right now…
Many of the changes that we have chosen to make over the years are:
One way we Reduce is to buy in bulk. Hardly any packaging AND better prices!
We bought a new Energy Efficient Gas Furnace last winter AND I was a big girl and turned the heat down 1 whole degree this winter..think it made a difference? YES! As a matter of fact I was pleasantly surprised it made a significant difference! Who knows..maybe next winter I’ll even go down another degree!
One HUGE thing that we are in the process of doing is replacing all of our light bulbs in the house. Are you ready for this..we have 47 light bulbs in our house! That is NOT including lamps. Just light fixtures in the ceiling! Oh the energy this uses!! In some of the rooms..like the bathroom and kitchen…my kids are continually leaving the lights on. Since they have refused to “remember” to turn them off I have slowly been letting them burn out..to make a little point! I think they are getting it!!
So now it’s time to start replacing them 🙂 I was so excited to partner with GE because getting energy efficient light bulbs fit perfectly in with our family goals and beliefs!
So I headed out to get some new light bulbs at Wal-Mart! This is what I ended up starting out with…
I started out with replacing our kitchen lights…well because of selfish reasons..I need light to cook! LOL Look at the difference between
Before – Yep..5 lights burnt out!
After – Yay! My kids promised to turn the lights out after themselves..I told them these would burn for a few years if they would use them wisely.
Next it was on to the Bathroom…2 of our bathrooms have 7 lights in them…Aaack! One of those bathrooms is my kids bathroom!
After – Well I LOVE the lighting of these loooong lasting bulbs and I LOVE that they are smaller..BUT one was broken so I had to return to the store..but I wanted you to see how pretty it looked anyway 🙂
We reuse plastic bags that we occasionally get from the grocery store. We reuse foil..of course! We sometimes reuse zip lock bags if all that was in them were crackers or something that won’t contaminate the next thing we put in it. We reuse Gift bags, and wrapping paper.
Use our own Grocery Bags – We also have our own Grocery Bags that we use.
We are fortunate enough to live in an area that really encourages Recycling. We get a small percentage taken off of our garbage bill for using a Recycle bin. So we have this HUGE recycle bin and we fill it..every week..I know..you really wanted to see a picture of my Recycle bin
And the last but not least thing we are doing is researching into composting! I have never composted…I don’t know why..I love to garden and this year we have incorporated Vegetables in with our Flower Garden so I really wanted to keep our Soil nice and healthy..so Composting is next..I’m trying to decide what kind of Composter to use…
Sooo discover ways to save money for you and your family with projects that help you reduce, reuse and recycle. Changing to GE energy efficient light bulbs is just one way to save money find the right energy-efficient light bulbs for you!
