Almost 30 years ago my husband and I married, blending our families together. He had two kids (a son 12 and a daughter 10) and I had 2 kids (2 daughters 9 and 11). We knew that it would be difficult, but you never know until you are in neck deep and feeling as though you may drown any minute, just how difficult life can be.
Every parent knows the challenges every child can bring into a home. Good challenges I mean! God made every child so different and what works with one child…almost for sure isn’t going to work with another! Ugg. So begins the journey of finding what works with what child and how God created them and how best to work them, so that they “hopefully” will respond the way we as parents would like.
Life is a roller coaster of ups and downs for sure!
Our kids had been through so much and they needed a special love, so when the usual tips and tricks of parenting didn’t work on them… We began praying and developing family mottos…Our hearts were brought to this scripture:
Love never fails ~ 1 Corinthians 13:8
Yes that about summed up every problem we would needed to resolve, with tenderness and deep care, we were able to overcome some pretty huge obstacles.
Between kids going to the “other” parent and all of the craziness and relationship building it took to step parent our new kids and blend all of our hearts together…
The Motto/Scripture “Love never fails” was the only way we could hold our family together.
There are no perfect families and no perfect solution for every situation. Each family finds their way through trial and error, hope, laughter and joy and 30 years later you realize just how special those days were and what kept you together.
Along our journey God gave us 3 more kids…2 still at home. That’s 7 kids!
Our “main” motto is still the same BUT we’ve added many more.
- Some silly (More Power to Ya taken from Andy Griffith),
- Some serious (If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything) and some that make no sense at all.
An everyday average family…ur uh, well except they have 19 kids! The great thing about the Bates family though, they are the same as you and I. They have their share of ups and downs as well, just on a larger scale!
The Bates family also have some fun mottos!
- “If you don’t have big dreams you’ll never go anywhere in life!” Tori
- “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Gil
- “Duct tape is always important” Nathan
