How to start your own blog TODAY!
I started blogging 3 1/2 years ago, before that I had never even heard the term “blog”. I had no idea what it even meant…umm I still don’t know exactly what it means except that it’s just a term for “writing your heart out, creative outlet or blah, blah, blah!” I sort of made up those terms..but you get the idea.
Although I had been journalling for 30 years..that’s about as far as my writing went. So I was not a proffessional writer with experience by any means!
We came to a point a few years ago when we needed some extra income. Like who doesn’t right?! I didn’t want to give up babysitting my Grandkids nor did I want to work outside the home full time.
I began to search online for how I could make some extra income and found that I could take surveys! I made $100 my first month. I was amazed that I could actually make a little extra money online. Real live legitimate money! The more I researched information about how to start a blog, the more I realized maybe I could do this “bloggy” thing too!
I began to pray and God showed me that I had many gifts and talents that others might be interested in, and so in a step of faith I started a blog.
Let me tell you, if I can do it so can you! Whether it’s crafting, sewing, cooking, faith, sports, fitness, healthy living or a million other things…there is a place for YOU on the internet. People want what you have! They want your heart!
So when you are ready, this is what you will do…

There are 3 parts to How to Start a Blog
1. Choose a Domain Name – This is the name you will call your blog/website. Mine is Faith Filled Food for Moms or www.faithfilledfoodformoms.com. Now I didn’t know when I first chose a domain name that it is usually thought better to have a short and sweet name that is not hard to remember. Well, like I said..I had no idea what I was doing sooo Faith Filled Food for Moms came about. It’s a good name though! LOL
2. Choose a Hosting Company – This is the company that you contract with that houses your domain name. Sort of like buying a house, you own that little piece of real estate. I use Bluehost, it came highly recommended when I first started and so this is the company I have been with ever since.
Plus their prices are super affordable. Yes there is a small cost to setting up a blog. Small, considering the income that can be made from it.
Once you have decided on your Domain name and have decided on a hosting company you are all set to log in and set up your website! It’s WAY easier than you can imagine. When you create an account with Bluehost, they will walk you through getting your new Domain set up.
After you have your Domain name you will then pick which plan you are interested in. My suggestion is that you start with the least expensive plan. This way you will feel confident that you can afford it and that it meets your budget. I also picked the Domain Whois Privacy because it shields your personal address and phone number from being displayed to the public.
Once you have created your account, picked your Domain Name and picked your package, you are ready to set up your WordPress website. Simply go into the Control Panel/Cpanel and choose WordPress!
Your site is now built!
Now that you have gone through these easy steps for setting up the inside and behind the scenes of you blog it is now time for the super fun part! Decorating!
3. Choose a Theme – A theme is what your blog will look like. There are tons of WordPress themes out there! Think about what kind of blog you are goint to have and go from there. WordPress has a built in Theme that you can use or you can use your own unique style by picking something different.
Will you do a lot of Food and Recipes, like me? Then using a good Foodie Theme is what you are looking for.
Will you be doing photography? Then you may want a theme with a nice photo gallery.
Will you be selling things? You may consider a theme with an e – commerce tab already built in.
Do you want a girlie feminine look or a professional magazine type look?
The list goes on…it can be a bit overwhelming, there are so many awesome themes. The good news is that if you choose a theme you don’t really care for..you can always change it. Yes..themes are changeable, so don’t get too overwhelmed.
My best advice in this whole process, HAVE FUN WITH IT!
There is A LOT to learn, but if I can do it…so can you!
