I had never made Homemade Pretzels before..although my 14 year old has been begging me to try..she just LOVES those carbs..LOL. I just hadn’t made the time until the other night. My son needed to cook something for his German class. So we began searching for something somewhat simple. Then we saw Pretzels! Yay! This recipe is from www.FoodNetwork.com. But if you search around..all the Pretzel recipes are the same.
The only thing that I did different…I don’t have a Kitchen Aid so I Kneaded the dough by hand. Very EASY.. if you don’t have a Kitchen Aid and don’t know how to Knead dough..go here to this very short little tutorial. Oh and I didn’t have Pretzel salt or Kosher salt ..since we decided at the last minute to make these…they still turned out DEELISH!
Pretzels take a bit of time to make BUT are very easy and we ALL decided they were well worth it and we will definitely be making again!
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups warm (110 to 115 degrees F) water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt
- 1 package active dry yeast
- 4 1/2 cups flour
- 2 ounces unsalted butter, melted (this is half a cube of butter)
- Vegetable oil, for pan
- 10 cups water
- 2/3 cup baking soda
- 1 large egg yolk beaten with 1 tablespoon water
- Pretzel salt if you have it..don’t let this stop you..you can also use regular table salt
Mix together Water, Salt, Sugar and Yeast. Wait for the yeast to proof…this means to get bubbly..about 5-10 min. Then add flour and melted butter. Mix up and knead. If you have a Kitchen Aid use dough hook and knead for 4-5 min. If you don’t..knead by hand..use tutorial above if this is new to you.
Put kneaded dough back into a greased bowl and let rise for about an hour.
Divide dough into 12 equal pieces and make into long ropes..for BIG pretzels roll to 24 inches. While you are doing this.. Start water and baking soda boiling and preheat oven to 450 degrees.
Make an upside down U then cross over the ends
Then fold UPWARDS over the bottom of U shape and press down to stick together
Make all of your Pretzel shapes
Gently place Pretzel shapes into boiling water and soda. Boil for about 30 seconds then remove with a slotted spoon. Put on cookie sheet lined with foil or parchment paper. If you have parchment paper..I would suggest using. If not be sure and grease some foil or cookie sheet because these will stick a little to pan.
See how they puff up
Now top with egg and water glaze..this will make the surface golden brown and shiny! Add Pretzel Salt if you have some..if not, just use a sprinkling of regular table salt.
Bake for 12 to 14 min. at 450 degrees until dark brown.
Yum, Yum, Yum..they were gone instantly and it left them begging for more..Yay!
Have you ever made Pretzels? Are you intimidated by the process? Try something new..it’s fun!

Thanks for stopping by! Have a blessed weekend!
I hope that didn’t sound rude..I meant it nicely
When my friend and I got together we would make pretzels with the children (my older children when they were younger). I still miss those days. The kids would more likely than not make twisted pretzel sticks instead of traditional shaped pretzels. I don’t have the recipe though, so this is great!
Hi KewKew! What a totally awesome memory to have! Twisted Pretzels would be fun too. I’m glad you found this recipe so that you can continue to create more memories..again! Thanks so much for stopping by! Blessings
I have never made pretzels but you sure make it appear easy. Good job! Stopping by via SITS as a first time visitor.
